Thinking About Getting A Fireplace? Three Types You Can Choose From

Posted on: 4 September 2018

If you are thinking about getting a fireplace for your home, you can use it in the winter to heat the room the fireplace is in and enjoy sitting in front of a cozy fire. You will find, however, that there are many types of fireplaces to choose from. Below are three of these types so you can decide what would work best in your home.

Open Hearth

Open hearth fireplaces are made of brick or stone. When a fire is burning, you can feel the heat very well when standing close to the fireplace. You can also hear wood crackling and smell it burning. Open hearth fireplaces may heat the room the fireplace is in, but it will not provide heat for the rest of your home.

If you do not have a fireplace in the home already installed, it will require a builder to put in the opening and to add a chimney and venting to the home.

Something else to consider with an open hearth is you must keep it clean. For example, ashes and soot need to be cleaned on a regular basis. The chimney will have to be cleaned yearly.

Enclosed

An enclosed fireplace is much like an open hearth fireplace but it is enclosed with a glass panel. This would be a good choice if you want the ambiance of a fire but do not want to feel the heat. Some heat will escape, however, but you can sit closer to the fireplace without becoming too hot.

Because the fireplace is enclosed you will not have as much of a mess. For example, ashes will not be able to come outside of the fireplace for you to clean up. You still do have to remove the glass panel to clean the fireplace as you do with an open hearth fireplace.

Electric

If you do not want to mess with buying fireplace wood, as well as the mess of cleaning ashes, soot, etc., an electric fireplace would be a good option for you. This fireplace runs via electricity but turning on a switch, much like a light switch.

An electric fireplace looks like a traditional fireplace, but it does not burn wood or gas. Instead, these fireplaces run via electricity and are inserted into an existing fireplace. Fake logs are placed into the opening and a fake fire will burn. Both the logs and the fire look real. You can also find electrical fireplace logs that make a crackling sound when the fireplace is turned on. This makes the fireplace look even more like a traditional one.

These fireplaces do not put out any kind of smoke, so you do not have to worry about installing any kind of vent system. Some electrical fireplaces are also portable.

Talk with a company that sells fireplaces, and they can give you more information about the best model for your home.
