The 3 Types Of Garage Door Openers

Posted on: 10 February 2015

There are three different types of garage door openers offered for consumers; chain drive, belt drive, and screw drive. Each one is functional and easy to operate with many accessories offered. This article will discuss the three different types of garage door openers and available accessories.

Chain-drive

Chain driven garage door openers are the most common type used because of its cost. They are built with strength and durability and if maintained correctly will last a long time.  This type of opener has a track attached to the garage door that is driven by a chain. The movement of the chain allows the bracket to move up and down the track to open and close the garage door.

Belt- drive

Belt driven garage door openers are known for their quiet operation. They operate like chain-driven models, but it uses a belt instead of a chain to open and close the garage door.  The belt is made of steel-reinforced rubber that is more durable than regular rubber.  Although this type of opener is the quietest, it is also the most expensive. It has a lot of moving parts that require regular maintenance and because the rubber belt can wear out over time, most manufacturers will offer a warranty on it.

Screw-drive

Screw driven garage openers are completely different from the chain and belt driven openers.  They use a lifting device that is run with a threaded steel rod.  Since, they have less moving parts they require the least amount of maintenance, which is what makes them attractive to homeowners.  One disadvantage of the screw driven opener is its sensitivity to temperature.  They work best in areas where the temperature is constant throughout the year.

Each type of opener is offered in two different sizes ½ hp and ¾ hp. Most standard garage doors will work just fine with a ½ hp but bigger, heavier doors need ¾ hp so it doesn't burn up the motor. Every unit includes standard accessories, for example, mounted controller, such as one mounted controller, vehicle controller, and safety sensors.  Other accessories such as keyless entry pads, key chain controllers, and multi-functional controllers are also popular.

No matter what type of unit you decide on, it's important to do your research to make sure the unit will work with your garage door, have the accessories you are looking for, and how to maintain it properly in order for it to last a long time. For more information, contact Eppers Construction.
