5 Signs Your Commercial Plumbing Needs An Upgrade

Commercial building plumbing can last a long time, but eventually, it will age to the point where an upgrade is necessary. The following signs mean it is time to consider an upgrade for your building.

1. Slow Drains

Slow drains due to blockages can happen occasionally, but when the problem becomes chronic the problem is more than just a simple blockage, you need more serious action. Damage to your pipes could be the culprit, but the problem could also be with the age of the system. On older commercial buildings, the drain pipes may not be sized correctly to higher modern water flows or heavier use of the plumbing in the building compared to the time of installation.

2. Rust and Mineral Stains

Rust and mineral stains in sinks, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures indicate that hard water could be an issue. Hard water will leave behind a buildup that can damage pipes, clog drains, and destroy plumbing fixtures over time. It may be time to upgrade the system to an integrated water softener so that you can avoid any plumbing issues caused by hard water in your building.

3. Water Discoloration

Discoloration of the water, particularly if it is orange, brown, or greenish, may indicate that old water supply lines throughout the building are beginning to corrode and rust out. If not addressed, you will end up with water leaks in the wall and all of the damage that the problem entails. A commercial plumber can check the lines for signs of rusting, corrosion, pitting, and pinhole leaks. If problems are found, you will need to have new pipes installed throughout the building.

4. Outdated Fixtures

Old toilets and sink faucets aren't just outdated in appearance, but also in function. Toilets in particular can waste a lot of water if they aren't newer, water-efficient models. Faucets should also be updated to more efficient options. Not only will the new fixtures provide an instant facelift to the restrooms, but they will also save you money. 5. Water Stains

Water stains look like brown or yellow discolorations on the ceiling tiles. Sometimes the stains are harmless and caused by a localized moisture spill on the floor above, but every stain needs to be checked for the source. This is especially true in commercial buildings with restrooms or plumbing of some sort on upper floors. Stains could be due to water leaks, drain clogs, or issues with a plumbing fixture. If there are a lot of stains, then the pipes, drains, or fixtures may need updating.
